Long-Time-no-See Book Post

Thursday, Aug 7, 2008

Life has been extremely busy. But I’ve been reading some stuff, though not really posting.

Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs

Not as interesting or as good as the Mercy Thompson series. But it was OK. I just don’t exactly love it. The characters were interesting, but I still think that everything happened far too soon for them all to develop any deep connection (especially between Anna and Charles). And maybe it wasn’t my kind of plot.

The sequel(s) won’t be on top of my list, unlike the Mercy books, but I’ll probably still read them.

Friday’s Child by Georgette Heyer

I read this mainly for writing inspiration (and, fortunately, I managed to write some 700-words afterward). The story was very light, not very serious, and rather sappy but it was a nice read to pass the time. The best thing I liked about this book is how well the author fleshed out the supporting characters, which made it more enjoyable.

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

I read the first three books, started on the first when it wasn’t popular a few years back, and though the sequels turned out to be worse than the first, I thought I ought to finish what I started. But I saw this and I couldn’t get past the first few pages reading it word-for-word, so I skimmed and read a Wikipedia summary. Three words: WHAT THE FUCK.

And that doesn’t even sum up my horror.

I believe Meyer was abducted by aliens and her brain experimented upon before she wrote this. And so did her editors’, for publishing this.

This was a book I needed to finish quickly else I wouldn’t be able to study at all during the weekend, heh. I was actually a bit hesitant to read a book from the series again because I’ve forgotten what had happened in the last two books. But I’m glad I read this because it reminded me why I read the first two books in the first place. I loved Mercy Thompson and Briggs’ other characters. : D

It was Zee’s and a bit of Ben’s turn to be put under the spotlight now, which is good because they, as characters, have developed along with Mercy, Adam, and Sam. It’s always refreshing to find characters other than the protagonist being fleshed out. I’m also glad that the resolution between Mercy’s two relationships has been included in this book already. It’s not good to drag that out too long.

But still, that’s not just everything that I enjoyed.

There are still a few plot holes, but otherwise I understood better. Sometimes it feels rushed, but sometimes the pace is just fine. I like Mercy immensely, and there’s more about Jesse in this book than the other one (I just couldn’t picture her being as a person in the second book much).

Well, now I think competition between Adam and Sam is the only competition possible, LOL. I doubt Stefan stands a chance (and I’ve read a little piece on the FAQ in Patricia Briggs’ website. =)

Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

I intended to read Greywalker but I ended up reading this instead. Hehe. I didn’t exactly know it was the second book to the series (Mercy Thompson series) so I read and it wasn’t until Mercy started talking about past events and debts that I realized, okay, this definitely isn’t the first book. I finished Blood Bound regardless, and I’ve been doing the reading-in-descending-order for the past few days (the Southern Vampires series, the Bridgerton series, etc.) so I’m pretty much used to it. I guess the only thing I’m confused of is Mercy’s age.

Anyway, Patricia Brigg’s world has a different feel from Charlaine Harris’, and this time it’s the werewolves and fae who came out in the open first, vampires still keeping their existence secret. I don’t know which world seems darker - maybe neither is, but it has that different feel to it. Vampires don’t exactly hog the spotlight in Mercy’s world, even if this particular book in the series have them slightly in focus.

I like Mercy’s character and even the wolves, Samuel and Adam. I hadn’t read anything with a walker before. Usually it’s just human, vampire, werewolf, shapeshifter, and faeries. Now there’s a character who shapeshifts, isn’t a vampire nor were, and can pass for a human (but she isn’t…since she’s a Walker, so it’s altogether a different thing). Stefan is a very interesting vampire, with that Scooby-doo look-alike van. I’d like to know how everyone met each other so I’m going to read the first book, Moon Called, soon.

Should I talk about relationships? Because I can’t help it, >__<;; LOL. I’m always interested in romance. Or the possibility of one.
